Collagen and Stretch Marks: What to Know

How the structures involved in Stretch Marks differ from normal

Short answer

Stretch marks form when skin is stretched and its collagen and elastin framework remodels; treatments may soften their appearance but cannot erase them completely.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main tissue change
Remodelling of dermal collagen and elastin
Common timing
After rapid growth or body change
Treatment goal
Soften contrast and texture rather than erase every line

What happens in the skin

Stretch marks, also called striae, are lines that develop when skin changes faster than its supporting tissue can adapt. They may begin pink, red, purple, or darker than surrounding skin and often fade to a lighter shade over time. The dermal collagen and elastin network becomes reorganised, which is why the lines can look slightly indented or have a different texture. They are common after growth, pregnancy, muscle gain, or weight change and are not a sign that the skin is unclean or damaged by poor hygiene.

Options to discuss

Moisturiser can reduce dryness and make the surface feel more comfortable, but it does not rebuild deeper scar-like changes on its own. A clinician may discuss [Microneedling](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/microneedling/), [Fractional Laser Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/fractional-laser-treatment/), [RF Microneedling](/treatments/laser-and-energy/rf-microneedling/), or [Carboxytherapy](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/carboxytherapy/) depending on the mark’s age, colour, location, and your skin type. Improvement is usually gradual and may require a planned course. Ask about healing time, pigment changes, discomfort, and aftercare before choosing a procedure.

When to seek an assessment

Arrange a review if lines appear suddenly without an obvious growth or body change, spread quickly, or occur with easy bruising, unusual weakness, or use of steroid medicines. Medical assessment is also sensible when a mark is painful, persistently itchy, inflamed, or being mistaken for another rash. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and check whether a broader hormonal or medication-related issue needs attention.

Questions for your doctor

Are these stretch marks, and are they early or mature? Which option suits their colour and texture? What degree of improvement is realistic for my skin type, and how should I protect the area while it heals?

Questions people ask

Can collagen cream remove stretch marks?

A cream may moisturise the surface, but it cannot reliably rebuild the deeper structural changes that create a stretch mark.

Do collagen-stimulating treatments work on old marks?

They may improve texture or contrast for some people, but mature marks can respond differently and results vary by skin and treatment.
