Why your nose feels blocked
Viral inflammation makes the lining inside the nose swell and increases mucus, so air has less room to pass. A cold may also bring sneezing, a sore throat, cough or a mild temperature. Allergic Rhinitis and House Dust Mite Allergy more often cause repeated sneezing, itching and watery discharge. Sinusitis or Chronic Sinusitis can add facial pressure, reduced smell and thicker discharge. A blocked nose at night with loud snoring or pauses in breathing may need discussion of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. A blocked nose is a symptom, not proof of any one condition.
Ways to ease the blockage
Drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration, rest, and use saline nasal drops or a gentle saline rinse with water prepared according to the product instructions. Raising your head slightly during sleep may make breathing more comfortable. Avoid smoke and other irritants. A pharmacist can explain whether a decongestant or Allergy Medication is suitable; some nasal sprays are intended only for short use, and oral products may not suit people with certain heart, blood-pressure, eye or pregnancy-related concerns. Never share nasal applicators.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help if nasal blockage comes with severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, confusion, or a serious allergic reaction. Arrange medical review if symptoms are one-sided and persistent, follow a facial injury, include severe facial pain or eye swelling, or keep returning. Ask for advice if a child is struggling to feed or breathe. Urgency depends on the warning signs and effect on breathing, not on the blockage alone.
