Cold hands and pins and needles

Pins and needles can happen when a hand or arm stays in one position and a nerve is compressed; it often settles after movement. Repeated or spreading symptoms may be linked with peripheral neuropathy, type 2 diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency, or hypothyroidism. Fast breathing during panic or anxiety can cause tingling around the hands and mouth. A symptom in one limb with weakness, facial drooping, speech trouble, or sudden imbalance can indicate a stroke or transient ischaemic attack and needs urgent action.

Change position gently, keep the hands comfortably warm, and protect numb skin from burns or cuts. Do not massage forcefully or use extreme heat. Track which fingers are affected, whether symptoms are on one or both sides, how long they last, and any neck pain, weakness, balance change, thirst, or fatigue. Arrange medical review when episodes recur, last longer than expected, disturb sleep, or gradually spread.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden pins and needles with facial drooping, one-sided weakness, trouble speaking, new severe headache, or loss of balance. Seek urgent help for a cold, pale or blue hand with severe pain or loss of movement. Rapidly worsening weakness, breathing difficulty, or confusion also requires emergency assessment.

Ask whether your pattern needs nerve, circulation, glucose, thyroid, or vitamin checks. Tell your doctor about diabetes risk, diet, alcohol use, medicines, neck or wrist strain, and whether symptoms improve when you change position.
