What should you know about coital angina?

Sexual activity raises heart rate and blood pressure for a period, increasing the heart's need for oxygen. Angina occurs when the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen for its demand. Symptoms may include pressure, tightness, heaviness or burning in the chest, sometimes with breathlessness, sweating, nausea or discomfort spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Hypertension and other cardiovascular problems can contribute to risk. Chest Tightness during or soon after sex deserves attention even if it settles.

Stop the activity and rest if symptoms begin. Use prescribed angina medicine exactly as directed; do not borrow someone else's medicine. Arrange medical assessment before resuming sexual activity, particularly if symptoms are new, changing or happening with less exertion. A clinician may review medicines and risk factors and may use an Electrocardiogram. Blood Pressure Medication or Statin Therapy may be discussed when clinically appropriate. Do not stop heart medicines without advice.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or tightness that is severe, lasts longer than expected, returns at rest, or occurs with breathlessness, faintness, sweating, nausea or spreading discomfort. Do not drive yourself. Emergency assessment is also needed after collapse or if symptoms do not improve with the action prescribed for your angina.
