Coffee au lait spots: what to know

The colour comes from increased melanin in a defined area of skin. These marks may be present from childhood or become noticeable over time, and they can occur on many body areas. A single stable patch is commonly assessed differently from numerous spots, patches with an unusual border, or marks appearing alongside other physical changes. A photograph and skin examination help a clinician compare size, edge, colour, and distribution.

Do not confuse a coffee au lait spot with an inflamed lesion such as Acne or Folliculitis. Those conditions usually produce raised, tender, itchy, or pus-filled changes rather than a flat pigment patch.

Record when you first noticed the mark and whether its outline, shade, or surface has changed. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin to reduce darkening and protect the area from ultraviolet exposure. Avoid picking, bleaching products, or abrasive scrubs, which can irritate skin and make pigment look more uneven. A dermatologist can advise whether observation is enough or whether a targeted treatment is appropriate for a cosmetic concern.

Arrange a clinical review if a spot grows quickly, develops several colours, becomes raised, bleeds, crusts, hurts, or changes its border. Seek prompt care for a rapidly evolving mark or a new widespread pattern, especially when other symptoms occur. Urgency is based on the skin changes themselves, not on assuming that a spot represents a particular diagnosis.

Ask whether the mark has features of a typical café-au-lait macule, whether you should photograph it for monitoring, and which warning changes should trigger an earlier appointment. If removal is being considered, ask about expected colour change, irritation, and the chance that treatment may not fully even the skin tone.
