What should you know about cod skin graft?

During grafting, the surgeon prepares the wound bed and places skin taken from another part of the body. The donor site also needs dressings and time to heal. The graft must connect with the wound’s blood supply, so movement, pressure, infection, smoking, and poor circulation can affect recovery.

The graft may initially look swollen, pale, dark, or uneven before it settles. A graft is not the same as a cosmetic resurfacing treatment. Follow the surgeon’s dressing instructions exactly, keep the area protected, and avoid rubbing, soaking, stretching, or strenuous activity until you are cleared. Do not remove a dressing or apply an unapproved cream simply because the graft looks different from nearby skin.

Keep follow-up appointments so the team can check graft attachment, the donor site, infection, and scarring. Tell them about diabetes, circulation problems, nicotine use, medicines that affect bleeding, and any difficulty following wound-care instructions before surgery.

Contact the surgical team promptly if the graft lifts, becomes increasingly painful, develops worsening redness, foul drainage, bleeding that will not stop with instructed pressure, or a sudden change in colour. Fever, spreading warmth, confusion, or feeling very unwell warrants urgent medical assessment.
