What should you know about CO2 laser resurfacing under the eyes?

The under-eye area has delicate, thin skin and sits close to the eyelids and eye surface. Resurfacing removes or heats selected skin to encourage a smoother surface and collagen remodelling. It may help some fine lines and texture concerns, but it cannot correct every cause of under-eye darkness, hollowing, bags or laxity.

Swelling, redness, sensitivity, peeling and temporary colour change can occur during healing. Results depend on the concern, skin tone, laser type, depth, eye protection and how the skin heals. An assessment should also check for eyelid conditions, dry eye symptoms and previous procedures.

Ask who will perform the procedure and how the eyes will be protected. Tell the clinician about contact lenses, dry eyes, eye disease, cold sores, medicines, recent tanning and previous eyelid surgery or injections. Do not apply products near the treatment area unless your clinician includes them in the plan.

During recovery, keep hands and products away from the treated skin except as directed. Avoid rubbing, picking, intense heat and sun exposure. Arrange follow-up if requested, especially when treating close to the eyelid margin.

Contact the clinic urgently for worsening eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, light sensitivity, difficulty opening the eye, marked swelling, blistering or discharge. Increasing redness, fever or severe skin pain also needs prompt assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment when vision or the eye surface may be affected.

Ask whether your concern is surface texture, fine lines, pigment, hollowing or bags, and whether CO2 is suited to that cause. Discuss the exact treatment boundary, eye protection, recovery, pigment risk, alternatives such as fractional laser treatment, and the plan for unexpected eye or skin symptoms.
