CO2 Laser for Keloid Scars: What to Know

A keloid is scar tissue that grows beyond the original wound and can remain raised, firm, itchy, tender, or darker than nearby skin. A laser can remove or remodel selected surface layers and improve texture, yet it does not remove the tendency to form excess scar tissue. Treatment depth, location, skin tone, and whether the keloid is active all affect the plan.

A dermatologist may discuss fractional laser treatment alongside steroid injection into the skin, especially when reducing thickness and symptoms requires more than surface remodeling. Pulsed dye laser treatment may be considered when redness is a prominent concern. Surgical approaches, including keloid removal surgery, can also be discussed, but recurrence prevention is part of the decision.

Have the scar examined before any cosmetic laser session. Tell the clinician about previous keloids, skin conditions, medicines, cold sores, and how your skin has reacted to procedures. Ask whether a test area, staged sessions, or combination treatment is appropriate.

After treatment, follow the wound-care instructions closely. The treated skin may be swollen, red, crusted, or sensitive while it heals. Keep it clean, protect it from sunlight, avoid picking, and use only recommended products until the surface has recovered. The scar may need monitoring after healing because renewed thickening can occur.

Seek prompt medical advice if pain or swelling is worsening rather than settling, redness spreads beyond the treated area, drainage develops, fever appears, or the wound is not healing as expected. Arrange review if the scar becomes rapidly thicker, increasingly itchy, or starts extending beyond its earlier borders. Urgent care is appropriate for severe swelling, breathing difficulty, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Ask which part of the keloid the laser is intended to change, whether another treatment should be used with it, how your skin tone affects settings, what wound care is required, and how recurrence will be watched after healing.
