What should you know about CO2 laser burn scars?

Burn scars can be flat, raised, tight, discolored, or attached to deeper tissue. Fractional laser creates microscopic treatment zones that encourage remodeling in selected scars. This may make a scar feel smoother or less stiff over a series of planned treatments, though the response varies.

A scar crossing a joint can restrict movement, and a tight scar near the eyelid, mouth, or neck can affect function. Laser is not always the first choice when contracture, severe thickness, open skin, or deep tissue loss is present.

Have the scar examined after it has healed and stabilized. Tell the clinician about previous procedures, itching or pain, pigment changes, infection, medicines, and whether movement is limited. Ask whether fractional laser is appropriate and whether scar revision surgery or a skin graft would better address function or missing tissue.

Before a session, follow the clinic’s instructions about sun exposure, creams, shaving, and infection prevention. Afterward, use only recommended cleansers and dressings, avoid picking, and protect the area from sunlight while it heals.

Get prompt clinical advice for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, severe pain, or a wound that is not closing. Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading swelling, breathing difficulty, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Arrange review if a scar becomes suddenly raised, bleeds, or restricts movement.
