What should you know about cloudy yellow urine in pregnancy?

Urine can look darker after a period with less fluid, and vaginal discharge can make a sample seem cloudy. A urinary tract infection can present with cloudy or strong-smelling urine, burning, urgency, or lower abdominal discomfort. Pregnancy can make urinary symptoms less straightforward, so a clinician may recommend testing even when discomfort is mild. A kidney infection presents with urinary symptoms plus fever, chills, side or back pain, nausea, or feeling very unwell. Cloudiness alone does not show which cause is present.

Drink fluids as advised by your maternity team and note whether the change repeats. Do not use leftover antibiotics, herbal products, or over-the-counter treatments without checking that they are suitable in pregnancy. Contact your midwife, obstetric team, or clinician if cloudiness persists, or if you have burning, urgency, pain, unusual discharge, or a new smell. A urine test can help guide safe treatment.

Seek prompt maternity or medical advice for fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, visible blood, or difficulty passing urine. Get urgent help if you feel severely unwell, cannot keep fluids down, or develop concerning pregnancy symptoms such as significant abdominal pain or reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy. Follow your local maternity service’s emergency instructions.

Ask whether you need a urine culture, which medicines are suitable if an infection is found, and which symptoms should prompt immediate contact. Tell the clinician how far along the pregnancy is, your fluid intake, medicines, allergies, and any previous urinary infections.
