What should you know about cloudy, unusual-smelling urine?

Urine may look cloudy when it contains crystals, mucus, cells, or other material. A stronger smell can occur when urine is concentrated, after some foods or medicines, or when bacteria are present. Burning while passing urine, needing to go often, lower abdominal discomfort, or blood makes a urinary tract infection more concerning. Fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back can point to infection higher in the urinary system, including a kidney infection. Cloudiness alone does not identify the cause.

Notice when the change started and whether it appears on every visit to the toilet. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and observe whether the urine becomes clearer. Do not take leftover antibiotics, because the right treatment depends on the cause and a urine test may be needed. A clinician can assess symptoms and arrange urine testing when infection, blood, or another urinary problem is suspected.

Arrange prompt medical advice for cloudy or strong-smelling urine that persists, returns, or comes with burning, frequent urination, pelvic pain, or visible blood. Seek urgent care for fever, shaking chills, vomiting, new confusion, or pain in the side or back, especially if you feel very unwell or cannot keep fluids down. These features can accompany a kidney infection and need timely assessment.

Ask whether your symptoms call for a urine test, whether any medicines or supplements could change urine smell, and which warning signs should prompt faster review. Tell the clinician about fever, pain, discharge, pregnancy, urinary conditions, and recent antibiotics.
