Cloudy urine and a urinary tract infection

A urinary tract infection can inflame the urinary lining, allowing cells, mucus, or bacteria to make urine look cloudy. Burning, urgency, frequent small amounts, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell may occur alongside the change. Cloudy urine is a common presentation of a urinary tract infection, but it does not tell you whether infection is present or how far it has spread. Fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the back or side can signal involvement of the kidneys and needs faster attention.

Arrange medical advice when cloudy urine comes with urinary pain, urgency, or repeated frequency. A clinician may test a clean-catch urine sample and choose treatment based on your symptoms and results. Drink fluids normally unless you have fluid restrictions, and do not take leftover or borrowed antibiotics. Complete any prescribed treatment as directed and seek review if symptoms fail to improve or return.

Seek prompt care for fever, shaking chills, back or side pain, vomiting, confusion, faintness, visible blood, or difficulty passing urine. Pregnant people, children, older adults, and people with kidney disease or reduced immunity should contact a clinician early when urinary symptoms appear. Worsening symptoms can require examination rather than home observation.
