Cloudy urine with yellow discharge

Yellow discharge may come from the urethra, vagina, cervix, or another genital source, while cloudiness may come from urine mixing with that fluid. Burning, urgency, or frequent urination can occur with a urinary tract infection, and cloudy urine is a presentation of that condition; however, discharge can require different testing and treatment. Pelvic pain, genital irritation, sores, an unusual smell, or pain during sex are useful details. Recent sexual contact, pregnancy, or a new product may also change the assessment.

Arrange a medical assessment, particularly if the discharge is new, persistent, or accompanied by urinary pain. Avoid douching or inserting products that may irritate tissue, and avoid sexual contact until you have advice if an infectious cause is possible. Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics. Note the colour, amount, smell, timing, associated pain, and any recent medicines or sexual exposure so the clinician can choose appropriate urine or swab tests.

Seek urgent care for fever, chills, worsening pelvic or side pain, vomiting, faintness, pregnancy with pain or discharge, heavy bleeding, severe testicular pain, or inability to pass urine. Prompt review is also needed for sores, rapidly worsening symptoms, or visible blood. A kidney infection can cause fever and back or side pain and needs timely treatment.
