Cloudy urine without a urinary tract infection

Urine may look cloudy when it is concentrated, especially after sweating, limited fluid intake, or overnight. Minerals can form visible crystals, and mucus from the urinary or genital tract can add pale threads. Some supplements or medicines can alter colour or clarity. A negative test does not mean every cause has been ruled out: timing, sample collection, and the test used matter. Recurrent cloudiness with pain, blood, swelling, or changes in urine volume deserves a clinician's review even when infection is not found.

Compare a fresh sample with urine later in the day, note what you drank and any new medicines or supplements, and record pain, urgency, discharge, or visible blood. Maintain ordinary hydration unless your clinician has advised restriction. If cloudiness persists or keeps returning, arrange an appointment and bring the timing of any previous urine test. Do not assume a negative infection test explains the symptom completely.

Get prompt care for severe back or side pain, fever, vomiting, confusion, visible blood, markedly reduced urine, or inability to pass urine. Seek a routine review for repeated cloudiness, new swelling, persistent pain, or a continuing change in urine amount. People with kidney disease, pregnancy, or immune problems should use a lower threshold for medical advice.
