Cloudy urine with white sediment: what to know

Sediment may be more noticeable when urine is concentrated, such as after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or simply drinking less than usual. Mineral crystals can also make urine look hazy. Mucus or cells from the urinary tract may appear as pale threads or flecks. A urinary tract infection can cause cloudy urine and may also bring burning, urgency, frequent small amounts, lower abdominal discomfort, or a stronger smell. A kidney infection is more concerning when urinary changes occur with fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling markedly unwell. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the change occurred once or continues, and record its colour, smell, amount of sediment, and any pain or change in urination. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict them; do not force excessive water. Avoid using leftover antibiotics or urinary remedies without advice. If the sediment returns, arrange a medical review. A clinician may ask for a clean urine sample and decide whether urine testing or other checks are appropriate.

Seek prompt medical care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, visible blood, confusion, or difficulty passing urine. Contact a clinician soon if the change persists, keeps returning, or occurs during pregnancy, with diabetes, or with known kidney or urinary problems. A urinary symptom can need attention even when the sediment is mild.

Ask whether the sediment could be crystals, mucus, or infection; whether you need a urine test; which symptoms should prompt urgent review; and how much fluid is suitable for you if you have another medical condition.
