What should you know about cloudy urine then clear?

The first urine after sleep or a period of low fluid intake can be more concentrated and appear hazy; later urine may look clearer after drinking and passing urine again. Minerals, mucus, discharge, or recent sexual activity can also affect one sample. A urinary tract infection may cause cloudiness that fluctuates, particularly when urgency, burning, frequency, pelvic discomfort, or a strong smell occurs. A kidney infection is associated with fever, chills, nausea, or side or back pain. Clearing does not by itself rule out infection.

Note whether the cloudy sample is first in the morning, follows exercise or heat, or appears after a particular food or activity. Drink normally unless a clinician has limited your fluids, and compare changes without repeatedly overhydrating. If the pattern continues, arrange a review and ask how to provide a clean urine sample. Do not use leftover antibiotics or medicines intended for someone else.

Get prompt medical help for fever, side or back pain, vomiting, visible blood, confusion, or severe weakness. Contact a clinician early if you are pregnant or have diabetes, kidney disease, a catheter, or reduced immunity. Repeated cloudiness deserves assessment even when each episode clears.

Ask whether the timing suggests concentration or whether testing is needed, which sample is most useful, and which changes should prompt urgent advice. Share how quickly the urine clears, how often this happens, and any smell, pain, urgency, fever, or discharge.
