What should you know about cloudy urine sometimes?

Urine can look hazy when it is concentrated, especially after sweating, drinking less than usual, or passing urine after a long gap. Minerals, mucus, semen, vaginal discharge, or menstrual blood can also change its appearance. Cloudiness can occur with a urinary tract infection, which may also bring burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell. A kidney infection can cause fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling very unwell. Cloudy urine alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice when the change occurs and whether it follows exercise, heat, a new food, sexual activity, or a change in fluid intake. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and avoid using leftover antibiotics. If the urine returns to its usual appearance and you feel well, keep observing. Arrange a clinical review if episodes keep returning; a urine test can check for infection, blood, protein, or other changes.

Seek prompt medical care for cloudy urine with fever, pain in the side or back, vomiting, visible blood, confusion, or marked weakness. Contact a clinician sooner if you are pregnant, have diabetes, kidney disease, a urinary catheter, or reduced immunity. New urinary symptoms that persist should be assessed even without pain.

Ask whether your pattern calls for a urine test, whether medicines or supplements could alter the appearance, and which symptoms should trigger same-day advice. Tell the clinician how long the episodes last, how often they occur, and whether the sample looked different after hydration.
