Cloudy urine with smelly discharge

Discharge can mix with urine in the toilet or collection container and make the sample look cloudy. Its colour, thickness, smell, and source are useful details. Irritation or infection of the vagina, penis, or surrounding skin can cause discharge and odour; urinary infection can separately cause cloudy urine, burning, urgency, or frequent urination.

Fever, chills, side or back pain, nausea, or feeling very unwell raises concern for infection affecting the upper urinary system. Dehydration can concentrate urine but does not explain every type of discharge. Avoid assuming that the discharge and urinary change have one cause without an examination.

Arrange a medical appointment for new, persistent, or unpleasant-smelling discharge, especially with burning, pelvic pain, sores, itching, bleeding, or urinary urgency. A clinician may examine the affected area and request a urine sample or a swab, depending on the symptoms. If sexual exposure could be relevant, say so privately; it helps guide appropriate testing.

Wash gently with water, keep the area dry, and avoid douching, fragranced washes, or self-treating with leftover antibiotics. Use the collection instructions if a urine test is requested and mention if discharge may have entered the sample.

Seek prompt medical care for discharge with fever, chills, worsening pelvic or side pain, vomiting, visible blood in urine, or rapidly increasing swelling. Get urgent help if you feel faint, confused, severely unwell, or cannot pass urine. Pregnancy with pain, bleeding, fever, or unusual discharge needs early clinical advice.

Ask whether the discharge may have contaminated the urine, whether you need a urine test, an examination, or a swab, and when it is safe to resume sexual contact if infection is suspected. Describe the discharge’s colour, texture, smell, timing, and any new products or sexual exposure.
