The location matters. Pain near the back below the ribs can involve the kidney or ureter, while pain farther forward can have digestive, muscular, or reproductive causes. Cloudiness may result from crystals, mucus, cells, or infection. A kidney infection commonly presents with urinary symptoms together with fever, chills, nausea, or flank pain; cloudy urine by itself cannot identify the source.

A stone may cause sharp, wave-like pain that travels toward the groin and may be accompanied by nausea or blood in the urine. A urinary tract infection can cause burning, urgency, frequency, and discomfort low in the abdomen. Dehydration may make urine concentrated, but it does not explain every cause of side pain.

Contact a clinician for advice if the pain persists, keeps returning, or occurs with urinary symptoms. They may examine your abdomen and back and request a urine test; further tests depend on the findings. Describe whether the pain is steady or colicky, how severe it feels, and whether it moves.

Sip fluids if you can drink normally, and rest. Use only pain medicine that is suitable for you and follow its label or a clinician’s advice. Do not use someone else’s antibiotics. Keep track of fever, vomiting, blood in urine, and your ability to pass urine.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever or chills, repeated vomiting, visible blood in the urine, faintness, confusion, or inability to pass urine. Get prompt help if you have one functioning kidney, known kidney disease, are pregnant, or feel unusually unwell.

Ask what area the pain may be coming from, whether your urine should be tested for infection or blood, and what symptoms would mean you need same-day review. Tell the clinician about previous stones, infections, recent injury, medicines, and pregnancy possibility.
