Cloudy urine and pancreatitis: what to know

Pancreatitis usually causes pain in the upper abdomen, often with nausea or vomiting, and the pain may spread toward the back. Cloudy urine points more directly to a urinary change, such as concentrated urine, cells from inflammation, mucus, crystals, or a urinary tract infection. Kidney infection can produce fever and pain in the side or back. A person can have separate abdominal and urinary symptoms, so the urine appearance cannot confirm or exclude pancreatitis.

If cloudy urine is your only symptom, arrange a routine medical assessment when it persists or repeatedly returns. A urine sample can help check for infection, blood, or other changes. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has advised restriction, and avoid diagnosing the cause from colour alone. If you have known pancreatitis or new upper abdominal pain, describe its location, severity, spread to the back, vomiting, and ability to eat or drink when seeking advice.

Go to urgent care for severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt assessment for fever, chills, side or back pain, visible blood in urine, or rapidly worsening symptoms because these may signal a urinary or kidney infection. Do not wait for cloudy urine to clear if you feel acutely unwell.

Ask whether your symptoms fit a urinary problem, pancreatitis, or both, and whether urine or blood testing is needed. Share any alcohol or gallbladder history only if relevant to your clinician, along with medicines, vomiting, fever, and the timing of each symptom.
