Cloudy urine only at night: what to know

By evening, fluid loss from normal activity, heat, or exercise may leave urine more concentrated. A long gap between drinks, a late meal, supplements, or urine sitting in the toilet can also change how it looks. Vaginal discharge or semen may be noticed more in a nighttime sample.

A urinary tract infection presents with cloudy urine when inflammation or bacteria affect the urinary tract. Burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal pain, or an unusual smell make that explanation more concerning. A kidney infection presents with fever, chills, nausea, or side and back pain. Dehydration can cause thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, and darker urine.

Notice whether cloudiness is present in a fresh sample and whether it follows heat, exercise, alcohol, a long workday, or reduced drinking. Maintain regular fluids during the day unless you have a medical fluid restriction. Avoid drinking large amounts just before bed to force a change in appearance.

Seek prompt care for fever, chills, vomiting, blood in the urine, new side or back pain, or trouble passing urine. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe dizziness, or inability to keep fluids down. These symptoms can indicate kidney infection or significant dehydration and should not wait for a pattern to settle.

Ask whether evening concentration could explain the change, whether a morning or midstream sample is preferable, and whether your medicines or supplements should be reviewed.
