Cloudy urine once in a while: what to know

An isolated change may follow reduced fluid intake, sweating, exercise, a salty meal, or urine sitting in the toilet. Crystals, mucus, semen, or vaginal discharge can also affect appearance. A single episode cannot show whether a disease is present.

A urinary tract infection presents with cloudy urine when the bladder or urethra is inflamed, commonly alongside burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell. A kidney infection presents with fever, chills, nausea, or side and back pain. Dehydration can cause thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, and darker urine.

Think back to what changed before the episode and keep a brief symptom record. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has advised restriction, and look at a fresh sample rather than urine that has been standing. Do not take antibiotics without medical advice.
