Cloudy urine once a day: what to know

The timing can provide a clue. Urine may look more concentrated after sleep, a long gap between drinks, exercise, or a salty meal. Cloudiness can also come from crystals, mucus, or discharge that is more noticeable in one sample than another. Looking cloudy once does not establish a diagnosis.

A urinary tract infection presents with cloudy urine when inflammation or bacteria affect the urine, usually with burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell. A kidney infection presents with fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back. Dehydration may cause thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, and darker urine.

Record when the cloudiness appears, what you drank beforehand, recent exercise, medicines or supplements, and any pain or urgency. Drink regularly through the day unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Avoid judging the cause from colour alone.

Contact a clinician promptly for repeated cloudiness with burning, urgency, lower abdominal pain, blood, or a strong smell.
