Cloudy urine on keto: what to know

A ketogenic diet can change fluid intake and urine chemistry. Eating more protein or taking supplements may alter how urine looks, while sweating, exercise, or simply drinking less can make it more concentrated. Crystals, mucus, or vaginal discharge can also cloud a sample. Cloudy urine by itself cannot identify the cause.

A urinary tract infection can cause cloudy urine, especially when burning, urgency, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell occurs. A kidney infection presents with urinary symptoms plus fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back. Dehydration may bring thirst, a dry mouth, dizziness, or darker urine.

Notice whether the change follows a long gap without fluids, exercise, a new electrolyte product, or a specific meal. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and avoid changing prescribed medicines on your own. Collect a fresh midstream urine sample in a clean container if you need to describe the appearance accurately.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, chills, vomiting, pain in the side or back, blood in the urine, marked weakness, confusion, or trouble passing urine. These features can signal a problem needing assessment, including a kidney infection. Seek urgent help for severe dizziness, inability to keep fluids down, or fainting.
