Cloudy urine on and off: possible causes

Intermittent cloudiness may appear when urine becomes concentrated and then clear after ordinary fluid intake. Crystals, mucus, or cells can also vary between samples. A urinary tract infection may fluctuate in how it feels, and some people have little discomfort at first; however, urine appearance cannot confirm it. Kidney problems are more concerning when episodes include blood, swelling, reduced urine, or pain in the flank or back. Consider the full pattern rather than one sample.

Keep hydration steady within the limits of your usual medical advice, and note whether cloudiness follows heat, exercise, illness, or a long period without drinking. Arrange a routine appointment if the pattern continues, becomes more noticeable, or comes with urgency, frequency, burning, blood, or discharge.
