What should you know about cloudy urine occasionally?

Occasional cloudy urine is often temporary, but repeated cloudiness or urinary symptoms should be assessed by a clinician. Urine can look hazy after you have had less fluid, after some foods or supplements, or when harmless mineral crystals collect in it. Cloudiness can also occur with white blood cells, bacteria, blood, or other material in the urinary tract, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the change happens after waking, exercise, sweating, or a day of drinking less than usual; concentrated urine may appear darker or less clear. A strong smell by itself is not enough to diagnose an infection. Cloudiness with burning when passing urine, frequent urges, lower abdominal discomfort, or blood can occur with a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back can signal infection higher in the urinary system and needs prompt attention.

If the appearance clears when you return to your usual fluid intake and you feel well, keep observing it. If it continues, returns often, or occurs during pregnancy, with kidney disease, or with a weakened immune system, arrange a medical review. A urine test can check for blood, white blood cells, bacteria, and other clues.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Do not force large amounts of water to try to clear the urine. Note when the cloudiness appears, how long it lasts, its colour and smell, and whether pain, burning, urgency, discharge, fever, or back pain occurs. Avoid using leftover antibiotics or urinary remedies without advice, because they may mask symptoms or be unsuitable for you.

If you also have vomiting, diarrhoea, heavy sweating, thirst, dizziness, or very little urine, dehydration may be contributing and deserves attention. Persistent changes should be checked rather than judged from a photograph or colour chart alone.

Seek urgent medical care for cloudy urine with fever or chills, pain in the side or back, repeated vomiting, confusion, faintness, or feeling markedly unwell. Contact a clinician soon for visible blood, painful urination, new discharge, difficulty passing urine, or cloudiness that does not settle or keeps returning. People who are pregnant, children, older adults, and people with kidney or urinary conditions should seek advice promptly when urinary symptoms develop.
