Cloudy urine when you do not have a UTI

A negative urine test or a clinician's assessment may make a UTI less likely, but it does not explain every change by itself. Low fluid intake can concentrate urine; crystals can form as urine chemistry changes; and mucus, protein, blood, or cells can make a sample look hazy. Stones and kidney conditions may need consideration when there is pain, blood, or repeated abnormal testing. A test result should be interpreted with your symptoms and medical history.

Keep a brief record of episodes, fluid intake, colour, and associated symptoms. Follow the clinician's instructions about repeating a urine test, especially if the first sample was collected during menstruation or after unusual exertion. Review medicines and supplements with a professional rather than stopping prescribed treatment yourself. Persistent cloudiness, recurrent blood, or changes in how often you urinate deserve reassessment even after a UTI has been excluded.

Contact a clinician promptly for fever, chills, vomiting, side or back pain, visible blood, swelling, reduced urine output, or difficulty passing urine. Seek earlier advice if you are pregnant or have known kidney disease. A kidney infection can cause systemic illness and may need urgent treatment, while dehydration can become serious when fluid loss is not replaced.

Ask what the urine result showed, whether it included blood or protein, and whether kidney function or imaging needs consideration. Clarify which symptoms should prompt a repeat test and whether your current medicines, supplements, or diet could affect the urine.
