Cloudy urine and nausea: what to know

Nausea may follow fluid loss when you have been sweating, had diarrhoea, or struggled to drink; concentrated urine can then look darker or cloudy. A urinary tract infection may cause cloudy urine alongside burning, urgency, frequent urination, or discomfort low in the abdomen. When infection affects the kidney, nausea can occur with fever, chills, or pain in the side or back. Cloudiness can also arise from crystals or sample contamination, so the appearance cannot establish the diagnosis by itself.

Take small, regular sips of fluid if nausea allows, unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Keep track of urine output, temperature, pain location, and whether urination burns. Arrange a clinical review if the symptoms continue or you cannot explain them. A clean-catch urine test can check for infection and other causes; avoid self-starting antibiotics or anti-nausea medicines prescribed for someone else.

Seek urgent care if nausea becomes repeated vomiting, you cannot keep fluids down, or you are passing very little urine. Fever with side or back pain, shaking chills, severe weakness, confusion, fainting, or visible blood in urine also needs prompt assessment. These signs can accompany a kidney infection or significant dehydration.
