Cloudy urine in males: what it can mean and what to do

A single cloudy sample can occur after waking, exercising, having sex, or drinking less fluid than usual. Persistent cloudiness, an unusual smell, pain, fever, or blood needs closer attention because these features can point to a urinary or kidney problem.

Urine can look cloudy when it is concentrated or contains mucus, minerals, inflammatory cells, or bacteria. Dehydration often makes urine darker and stronger-smelling; drinking fluids can help it return toward its usual appearance. A urinary tract infection may cause cloudy urine together with burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unpleasant smell. A kidney infection is more concerning when urinary changes occur with fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling very unwell.

In males, semen or prostate-related fluid can briefly alter urine appearance, especially after ejaculation. Cloudiness alone cannot identify the cause, and it does not by itself show that an infection is present.

Notice when the cloudiness started, whether it clears after drinking normally, and whether it appears in every urine sample. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and avoid using leftover antibiotics because the correct treatment depends on the cause.

Arrange a medical assessment if cloudiness continues, keeps returning, or comes with burning, discharge, pelvic pain, urinary difficulty, or a change in the urine stream. A clinician may ask about sexual and urinary symptoms and may test a fresh urine sample.

Seek urgent medical care for cloudy urine with fever, shaking chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, confusion, or marked weakness. These symptoms can occur with a kidney infection and need prompt assessment.

Get urgent help if you cannot pass urine, see visible blood, or have severe pain. If symptoms are mild but persistent, contact a clinician soon so an infection, stone, prostate problem, or another urinary cause can be checked.

Ask: Could my symptoms fit a urinary tract infection, kidney infection, dehydration, or a prostate-related problem? Do I need a urine test, and how should I collect the sample? Could medicines, supplements, recent sex, or a new discharge be affecting the appearance? What symptoms should prompt urgent help if they develop?
