Cloudy Urine and Kidney Disease

Kidney conditions can change urine, but cloudiness alone is a poor way to identify them. Protein or blood may sometimes make urine look unusual, while crystals can create a hazy appearance. A urinary tract infection can cause cloudy urine through inflammatory material, and a kidney infection presents with fever, chills, side or back pain, nausea, or feeling unwell. Long-term kidney disease may have few obvious symptoms, so risk factors and testing matter more than appearance. High blood pressure, diabetes, swelling, or changes in urine amount should be discussed with a clinician.

Note the colour, frequency, smell, and duration of the change, along with pain, swelling, fever, or changes in how much urine you pass. Drink fluids normally unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Book a medical review if cloudiness persists, returns, or occurs with urinary symptoms. Evaluation may include blood pressure measurement, urine testing for blood or protein, and blood tests that assess kidney function.

Seek prompt care for cloudy urine with blood, fever, burning, or flank pain. Get urgent help for severe side or back pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, very little urine, sudden swelling, or breathlessness. If you already have kidney disease, are pregnant, or take medicines that affect the kidneys, contact your healthcare team early when urine changes appear.
