Cloudy Urine and Itching: What to Know

Itching may affect the skin around the genitals rather than the urine itself. New soaps, fragranced products, sweat, tight clothing, dermatitis, or a fungal irritation can cause external itching. Cloudy urine may occur at the same time because of concentrated urine or a urinary tract infection. Most people with a urinary tract infection notice urinary symptoms such as burning, urgency, or passing urine often; itching is not enough to identify the cause. A kidney infection presents with fever, chills, side or back pain, nausea, or marked illness rather than itching alone.

Wash the area gently with water, dry carefully, and stop newly introduced scented products. Do not put creams, antiseptics, or antibiotics inside the urinary opening or vagina unless prescribed. Drink fluids normally if you have no fluid restriction, and observe whether cloudiness continues. Arrange an assessment if itching persists, there is discharge, sores, pain while urinating, pelvic pain, or a new sexual exposure. A clinician may examine the skin and request urine or other samples.

Seek prompt care for cloudy urine with burning, blood, worsening pain, or fever. Urgent evaluation is needed for fever with flank pain, vomiting, confusion, severe weakness, or inability to pass urine. Get earlier advice during pregnancy, with diabetes or immune suppression, or when symptoms are rapidly worsening. Avoid sexual contact until significant genital irritation or unexplained discharge has been assessed.
