What Can Cloudy Urine Indicate?

Urine may look hazy when it is concentrated, especially after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or drinking less fluid. Minerals can also make it appear cloudy. A urinary tract infection may cause cloudiness from inflammatory cells and bacteria, often with burning, frequent urination, urgency, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell. A kidney infection is more concerning and commonly presents with fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling unwell. Cloudiness alone cannot identify the cause or confirm a kidney problem.

Notice when the change began and whether it occurs every time you urinate. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and avoid using leftover antibiotics. If the urine clears after hydration and you have no other symptoms, monitor it briefly. Persistent cloudiness, repeated episodes, or urinary discomfort deserves a urine assessment. A clinician may ask for a urine sample and decide whether further tests are needed.

Arrange prompt medical care for cloudy urine with burning, urgency, blood, worsening pelvic pain, or a fever. Seek urgent help for fever with flank pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, severe weakness, or difficulty passing urine, because these can accompany a more serious urinary infection. People who are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, or have known kidney problems should seek advice sooner.
