What cloudy urine may indicate

Cloudiness describes an appearance, not a diagnosis. Urine may become concentrated when fluid intake is low, or it may contain salts, mucus, cells, or other particles. Toilet water and genital fluids can also change how it looks. A brief change that resolves may have a different explanation from cloudiness that continues.

Pain or burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, odor, or blood can occur with a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills, vomiting, or pain in the back or side may signal a kidney infection. Cloudy urine by itself cannot tell you which condition, if any, is present.

Think about timing and context: when the cloudiness started, whether it follows sleep or exercise, how much you have been drinking, and whether it clears later. Drink regularly if fluids are suitable for you, and keep track of symptoms rather than relying on colour alone.

Arrange a clinical review if the change persists, returns frequently, or is accompanied by urinary discomfort or general illness. A urine test may be used to look for infection or other findings. Do not begin antibiotics without professional advice, because treatment should match the suspected cause.

Seek prompt medical advice for cloudy urine with fever, chills, back or side pain, vomiting, visible blood, or worsening pain. Seek urgent help if urine will not pass, output becomes very low, confusion develops, or you feel suddenly much more unwell. These symptoms can require immediate assessment.
