Cloudy urine in the morning: what to know

Urine collects in the bladder while you sleep, and you usually go several hours without drinking. The first sample can therefore be more concentrated and may appear darker, hazier, or have a stronger smell. Particles such as crystals or mucus can also affect clarity. A urinary tract infection may present with cloudy urine, especially when burning, urgency, frequent urination, or lower abdominal discomfort are present. Fever, chills, nausea, or side and back pain raise concern for infection involving the kidneys. Appearance by itself cannot tell which explanation applies.

Compare the first urine with later samples without deliberately overdrinking. Note whether the cloudiness clears, remains, or returns, and record pain, burning, urgency, blood, fever, and smell. Drink according to thirst unless a clinician has prescribed a fluid limit. If the change lasts beyond the morning or repeatedly returns, arrange medical advice.
