Can a yeast infection cause cloudy urine?

Cloudy urine that remains cloudy in a clean sample, particularly with urinary urgency or burning, deserves assessment for a urinary cause rather than being attributed to thrush.

Thick vaginal discharge can enter the urine stream or collection cup and change its appearance. Typical vaginal thrush also causes itching, redness, soreness, and white discharge. Because inflamed skin is sensitive, contact with urine can produce surface stinging without an infection inside the urinary tract.

True cloudiness within urine can come from concentrated urine, white blood cells during a urinary infection, mineral crystals, blood, or other material. Appearance and smell alone cannot reliably separate these causes. Laboratory urinalysis can check for evidence of inflammation, blood, and other changes, while a culture may identify bacteria when indicated.

For a clean-catch sample, wash your hands, separate the labia, begin urinating into the toilet, then collect urine midstream in the sterile container without touching its inside. Tell the clinician if there is vaginal discharge or active bleeding, as either can affect interpretation.

A clinician may assess the vulva and vagina or take a swab when thrush is uncertain. Use an antifungal only in the formulation and body site directed on the label. If urinary symptoms accompany the cloudiness, seek urine testing rather than relying on leftover antibiotics or antifungal medicine.

Describe whether discomfort is on the outer skin or deeper during urination, and whether urgency, frequency, itching, or discharge came first. Ask if the urine sample may be contaminated by vaginal discharge, whether it should be repeated, and whether a vaginal swab would change treatment.
