What should you know about cloudy urine every morning?

Urine can look darker or less clear when you have not had fluids overnight. Food, supplements, vaginal discharge, crystals, mucus, or a small amount of blood can also change its appearance. If the cloudiness clears after drinking and does not return, concentration may be contributing. Persistent cloudiness deserves attention because a urinary tract infection can occur with burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell. A kidney infection may cause fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling very unwell. Cloudy urine alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the change is present only in the first urine of the day or continues later. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and observe any change in colour, smell, amount, or symptoms. Avoid using leftover antibiotics; the right treatment depends on the cause. If the pattern continues for several mornings, arrange a clinical review. A urine sample may help distinguish concentration from infection or other causes.

Seek prompt medical care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, or visible blood. Contact a clinician soon if you develop burning, urgency, frequent urination, or symptoms that keep returning. If you are pregnant, have diabetes, or have known kidney disease, seek advice earlier because urinary symptoms may need timely assessment.

Ask whether your symptoms call for a urine test, whether medicines or supplements could affect the sample, and which changes should prompt urgent review. Tell the clinician when the cloudiness began, whether it clears during the day, and whether you have pain, fever, discharge, or changes in urination.
