Cloudy urine during your period: what to know

Blood and vaginal discharge can mix with urine during a period, making a toilet view or cup sample look cloudy. Lower fluid intake, sweating, pain, or nausea can also concentrate urine. The appearance may therefore disappear when bleeding ends or hydration improves, but that pattern is not a diagnosis.

Keep drinking regularly if you have no medical fluid restriction. Note whether cloudiness occurs only while bleeding and whether it is present in a clean sample after the period. If testing is needed, tell the clinician about the bleeding and follow their collection instructions.

Do not douche or use someone else's antibiotics. Keep track of urinary pain, urgency, frequency, fever, unusual discharge, and any blood that seems different from your normal period.

Seek prompt care if cloudy urine comes with fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, feeling faint, visible blood outside expected menstrual flow, or difficulty passing urine. Arrange a review if burning, urgency, or frequent urination persists after the period or the cloudiness keeps returning.
