Cloudy urine and dehydration: what to know

When you drink less fluid than your body needs, urine becomes more concentrated. This may deepen its colour and make it look less clear, especially after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, or a busy day with little drinking. Concentrated urine alone does not establish the cause of cloudiness.

Cloudiness can also come from crystals, mucus, blood, or infection. A urinary tract infection may cause burning, frequent urination, urgency, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell. Sip water regularly and aim for urine that becomes lighter as hydration improves. If you have been losing fluid, replace it gradually and follow any fluid restriction given for a heart or kidney condition. Notice whether the cloudiness changes after drinking and whether it appears in more than one sample.

Do not use leftover antibiotics or assume that extra fluid will treat an infection. If the appearance continues, arrange a clinician review; a urine test can check for infection, blood, or other findings.

Seek prompt medical care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, visible blood, marked weakness, confusion, or difficulty passing urine. These features can signal a urinary or kidney problem that needs timely assessment. Arrange a routine appointment if cloudiness keeps returning, lasts after hydration, or occurs with burning, urgency, or frequent urination.

Ask whether your symptoms fit dehydration or require a urine test, how much fluid is suitable for you, and which changes should prompt urgent review. Mention recent illness, heat exposure, exercise, medicines, and any history of urinary or kidney problems.
