Cloudy urine and cystitis

Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder, often associated with burning when passing urine, urgency, frequent small amounts, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell. Cloudy urine may occur because inflammatory cells, mucus, or other material are present. However, concentrated urine, crystals, discharge, or another urinary condition can look similar. A kidney infection is a more serious possibility when bladder symptoms are joined by fever, chills, vomiting, or pain in the back or side.

Arrange medical advice if cloudiness comes with bladder symptoms or continues. A clinician may request a clean urine sample and decide whether treatment is suitable. Drink normally unless you have fluid restrictions, and do not rely on cranberry products or leftover antibiotics as a substitute for assessment. Note when symptoms began, how often you pass urine, and any medicines or pregnancy possibility.

Seek prompt care for fever, shaking, side or back pain, vomiting, blood in urine, confusion, severe weakness, or inability to pass urine. Contact a clinician sooner if pregnant or if you have kidney disease, diabetes, or reduced immune function. Mild symptoms that do not improve or repeatedly return should be reviewed.
