Cloudy urine but no UTI

A negative test or lack of typical urinary symptoms does not make the appearance meaningless, but it changes what clinicians consider. Dehydration can concentrate dissolved substances. Phosphate or other crystals may make urine look cloudy, and mucus or genital discharge can enter a sample. Some medicines and supplements alter urine colour or clarity. Less commonly, inflammation, blood, or protein needs checking. A kidney infection generally causes systemic symptoms such as fever or flank pain, rather than cloudiness alone.

Take fluids regularly and collect a clean midstream sample if a clinician requests testing. Tell the clinician about supplements, recent illness, discharge, and any previous urinary tests. Do not start leftover antibiotics: they may obscure testing and will not treat non-infectious causes. If the cloudiness resolves and does not recur, keep a note of the context; if it remains or returns, arrange a review.

Get prompt help if cloudy urine occurs with fever, shaking chills, side or back pain, vomiting, blood, reduced urine, or trouble passing urine. Seek earlier advice during pregnancy or with kidney disease, diabetes, or immune suppression. Repeated abnormal samples deserve follow-up even when burning and urgency are absent.

Ask what the previous test ruled out, whether a repeat clean sample is useful, and whether blood, protein, crystals, or kidney function should be checked.
