Cloudy urine after sex

Fluids from sexual activity can mix with urine and briefly change its appearance. Urine can also look hazy when you have had little to drink; Dehydration may cause darker, stronger-smelling urine.

Sex can move bacteria towards the urethra, and a Urinary Tract Infection may then cause cloudiness alongside burning, frequent small amounts, urgency, or discomfort above the pubic bone. Fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the back or side is more concerning for a Kidney Infection. Cloudy urine by itself cannot tell which explanation applies.

Drink fluids according to your usual needs, urinate when you need to, and note whether the urine clears the next time you pass it. Avoid scented products around the genitals, which can irritate sensitive tissue.

If symptoms continue, arrange a urine assessment rather than using someone else's antibiotics. If there is a new sexual partner, unusual genital discharge, sores, or pelvic pain, mention this privately to a clinician because additional tests may be appropriate.

Book an appointment for repeated post-sex cloudiness, painful urination, urgency, or blood in the urine. Seek urgent care for fever, vomiting, severe pelvic pain, or pain in the side or back, especially if you feel generally unwell.
