Cloudy urine after refrigeration

Cooling can make salts and other particles come out of solution, creating haze or sediment in a stored sample. This appearance alone does not show whether you have an infection, and a refrigerated sample should be interpreted using the collection and storage instructions provided by the laboratory.

Cloudiness in urine passed from your body, especially with burning, urgency, a strong smell, or lower abdominal pain, can occur with a Urinary Tract Infection. Fever, chills, nausea, or pain near the ribs or back needs faster review because these symptoms can occur with a Kidney Infection. Not drinking enough can also concentrate urine; Dehydration is another relevant possibility.

Follow the laboratory's instructions for timing, container, and storage. Do not add water, shake in household products, or use an old sample to decide whether you need treatment.

If the sample was collected for testing and looks unexpectedly cloudy, contact the laboratory or clinician about providing a fresh, clean-catch sample. Record whether the cloudiness was present before cooling and whether you have urinary symptoms.

Get medical advice when cloudy urine is also cloudy when freshly passed, keeps happening, or comes with pain or changes in urination. Seek urgent care for fever with side or back pain, vomiting, confusion, or feeling very unwell.

Ask whether the sample was stored correctly, whether it should be replaced with a fresh specimen, and whether your symptoms call for a urine culture or other assessment.
