What should you know about cloudy substance in urine?

A small amount of cloudiness may follow low fluid intake, exercise, or the settling of mineral salts. Mucus can sometimes appear as threads or floating material. Infection is more likely to need attention when cloudiness is paired with burning, urgency, frequent urination, pelvic discomfort, or a strong smell. Pain near the ribs or back, fever, chills, nausea, or vomiting can signal involvement of the kidneys. Vaginal or genital discharge can also mix with a urine sample, so the appearance by itself is not a diagnosis.

Use a clean container if you need to observe a sample, and note whether the cloudiness is present from the start or appears after standing. Drink your usual fluids unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Avoid trying to flush out symptoms with excessive water and avoid medicines left over from a previous illness. Arrange clinical advice if the change remains, recurs, or is accompanied by urinary discomfort. Testing a fresh urine sample can help distinguish infection from other causes.

Get urgent care if the cloudy substance occurs with fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, confusion, or a sudden decline in how you feel.
