What should you know about cloudy stuff in urine?

Urine can look cloudy after you have not had enough fluid, especially when it is darker or more strongly scented. Mineral crystals can also make it look hazy. Mucus or cells from the urinary tract may contribute to visible particles. A urinary tract infection can cause cloudiness along with burning, frequent urges, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell. A kidney infection needs prompt attention when urinary changes occur with fever, chills, pain in the side or back, or vomiting. Cloudiness alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice when the change began, whether it clears after drinking fluids, and whether it appears in every sample. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict them; do not force large amounts. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because the right treatment depends on the cause. If cloudiness continues, returns repeatedly, or comes with pain or urinary symptoms, arrange a urine assessment. A clinician may ask about medicines, recent illness, discharge, and hydration before deciding whether testing is needed.

Seek urgent medical help for cloudy urine with fever, shaking chills, flank or back pain, vomiting, confusion, or feeling markedly unwell. Contact a clinician promptly for blood in the urine, painful urination, trouble passing urine, or symptoms that are worsening. Pregnancy, childhood, older age, kidney disease, or a weakened immune system lowers the threshold for medical advice because urinary infections may need timely treatment.
