Cloudy, Smelly Urine in Men: What to Know

A change noticed once may settle after drinking fluids and passing urine again. Cloudiness can reflect crystals, mucus, cells, or other material; odour can become stronger when urine is concentrated. The appearance and smell cannot identify the cause on their own.

Dehydration can make urine darker, more concentrated, and more noticeable in smell. Certain foods, supplements, or medicines may also alter odour without causing disease.

A urinary tract infection may cause cloudy or unusually strong-smelling urine, often with burning, urgency, frequent urination, or lower abdominal discomfort. A kidney infection can add fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling very unwell. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Notice whether the change clears over the next several trips to the bathroom, and record associated symptoms, recent foods, new medicines, and how long the change has lasted.
