What should you know about cloudy pungent urine?

A strong smell can become more noticeable when urine is concentrated, especially after sweating, poor fluid intake, or overnight. Certain foods and supplements can also change odour. Cloudiness may come from crystals, mucus, or cells in the urine. When the smell and cloudiness occur with burning, frequent small amounts, urgency, pelvic pain, or blood, a urinary tract infection becomes a possibility. Fever, chills, nausea, or pain under the ribs or in the back can point to kidney involvement.

Have fluids at regular intervals if you can drink normally, and observe the urine over the next few bathroom visits. Avoid douching or perfumed products around the genitals, since they can irritate the area and confuse the picture. Seek clinical advice if the change lasts, returns, or comes with urinary symptoms.
