Cloudy pee and yeast infection: telling symptoms apart

Thrush affects the vagina and vulva rather than the bladder, so cloudiness within the urine may point to dehydration, a urinary infection, crystals, blood, or another urinary cause.

Vaginal thrush commonly presents with vulval itching or soreness and thick white discharge that usually does not have a strong smell. Urine touching inflamed vulval skin may sting even when the bladder is not infected. That external stinging can feel different from burning deep in the urinary passage.

Needing to urinate often or urgently, lower abdominal discomfort, strong-smelling urine, or burning during the urine stream is more suggestive of a urinary problem. Symptoms can overlap, and having thrush does not rule out a urinary infection. A urine sample and, when appropriate, a vaginal swab can distinguish them.

Drink according to thirst and observe whether cloudiness continues in a clean urine sample without vaginal discharge. Avoid vaginal douching and scented washes, which may worsen irritation. If symptoms are typical of a previously diagnosed episode of thrush, a pharmacist or clinician can help select an appropriate antifungal and explain how to use it.

Arrange testing if this is your first suspected yeast infection, cloudiness persists, treatment fails, symptoms keep returning, or you are pregnant, diabetic, or immunocompromised. Antibiotics should only be used when a bacterial infection is diagnosed or strongly suspected, because they do not treat yeast.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, pain in the side or back, vomiting, visible blood in urine, worsening lower abdominal pain, inability to pass urine, or feeling seriously unwell. Pelvic pain, sores, unusual bleeding, or foul-smelling or coloured discharge also needs examination because these findings are not typical of uncomplicated thrush.

Ask whether the cloudiness is coming from urine or vaginal discharge, whether both urine testing and a vaginal swab are appropriate, and which treatment matches the confirmed cause. Mention recent antibiotics, new intimate products, pregnancy, diabetes, and any previous similar episodes.
