What should you know about cloudy pale yellow urine?

Urine can look pale yellow when it contains a relatively large amount of water. A hazy or cloudy appearance may come from crystals, mucus, cells, or material that settles after the urine stands. A single change without other symptoms may settle after you drink normally and pass urine again.

Cloudiness can also occur with a urinary tract infection, especially when burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell appears at the same time. A kidney infection can cause urinary symptoms along with fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back. Dehydration more often makes urine darker and more concentrated, but fluid intake and illness can change its appearance in different ways.

Notice whether the change persists and whether it occurs with burning, urgency, pain, fever, blood, or a new smell. Drink fluids according to your usual needs unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s medicine, because the right treatment depends on the cause.

If the cloudiness continues, keeps returning, or comes with urinary discomfort, arrange an appointment. A clinician may ask about the timing and associated symptoms and may request a urine sample.

Seek prompt medical assessment for cloudy urine with fever, chills, vomiting, pain in the side or back, visible blood, or feeling significantly unwell. These features can accompany infection that needs treatment. Get urgent help if severe pain, confusion, fainting, or inability to pass urine develops.
