What should you know about cloudy milky urine?

A milky or opaque appearance can be caused by crystals, mucus, white or red blood cells, or discharge mixing with urine. Some changes are temporary, but the appearance becomes more meaningful when paired with symptoms. Burning, urgency, frequent urination, or pelvic discomfort can occur with a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills, nausea, and pain in the back or side can accompany a kidney infection. Dehydration may cause thirst, dizziness, and less urine, although it does not explain every cloudy sample. A visual description cannot identify the exact cause.

Note whether the urine is milky throughout or only briefly cloudy, and record any pain, fever, smell, discharge, or change in urine volume. Continue ordinary hydration unless you have been instructed to limit fluids. Do not borrow antibiotics. If the appearance persists, repeats, or comes with urinary symptoms, arrange a medical review and ask how to provide a clean sample for testing.

Contact urgent medical services for confusion, severe weakness, vomiting that prevents fluids, fever with side or back pain, visible blood, or inability to pass urine. Seek early advice during pregnancy or with kidney disease or impaired immunity. These warning signs need attention regardless of whether the urine looks pale, yellow, or milky.

Ask which urine tests are appropriate, whether medicines or supplements may contribute, and what follow-up is needed if the sample is normal. Explain when the change began, how often it occurs, and whether symptoms started before or after it.
