Cloudy grey urine: what to know

Lighting, the toilet water, cleaning products, or a container can make urine appear grey. In the body, concentrated urine, crystals, mucus, or discharge can change how it looks. Compare a fresh sample in a clean, clear container if the colour is difficult to judge.

A urinary tract infection may present with cloudy urine, unpleasant smell, burning, urgency, or frequency. Fever, chills, nausea, or side and back pain can occur with kidney infection. Cloudiness and colour alone cannot tell which explanation applies.

Drink fluids normally if you have not been advised to restrict them, and check whether the colour returns to your usual appearance. Consider recent medicines, supplements, foods, and any vaginal discharge.

Seek a routine assessment if the grey appearance continues, recurs, or is joined by urinary symptoms. A clinician may request a clean-catch urine sample and examine the full pattern rather than relying on colour alone.

Get prompt medical help for fever, chills, vomiting, new flank or back pain, confusion, severe weakness, or blood in the urine. Pregnancy, kidney disease, and immune problems call for earlier advice when urine changes are unexplained.

Ask whether the colour could be caused by a medicine, supplement, discharge, or infection, and whether testing is needed. Tell the clinician whether the sample looked grey outside the toilet, how long this has happened, and what other symptoms are present.
